Phil Weston (Will Ferrell) is a mild-mannered man who has always struggled to live up to the high expectations of his ultra-competitive father, Buck Weston (Robert Duvall). When Phil's son, Sam, is benched on Buck's youth soccer team, Phil decides to coach a struggling team of misfits, the Tigers, to give his son and the other kids a chance to play.
Phil initially embraces his role as a supportive and kind coach. However, as the rivalry with his father intensifies, Phil’s competitive streak takes over, leading to outlandish antics, over-the-top strategies, and a dependence on his assistant coach, coffee-obsessed ex-NFL player Mike Ditka (playing himself).
Amidst the chaos, Phil learns valuable lessons about teamwork, humility, and the importance of enjoying the game rather than obsessing over winning. The Tigers ultimately face Buck’s team in the championship, where Phil’s growth as a coach and father shines.
The film explores themes of family dynamics, competition, and self-acceptance. It humorously addresses the pressures parents place on themselves and their kids in youth sports, ultimately promoting the idea that fun and participation are more important than victory.
Kicking & Screaming received mixed reviews, with critics praising Will Ferrell's comedic performance but noting that the humor often leaned heavily on slapstick and absurdity. Despite this, the film was enjoyed by families for its feel-good message and entertaining cast.
