Sidewalk FC is the work of Thaddeus Barton, whom I might fairly describe as a soccerpreneur! For Thad, working within the community to raise awareness of soccer in Chicago seems to be an obsession. Rarely does a week go by without Sidewalk FC collaborating with local businesses, organizing a viewing party, curating a retail experience with Crossbar & Stay True Supply, or supporting the community through countless fundraising efforts.

The strength of Sidewalk FC lies in its ability to see the bigger picture and connect the dots. Many times, when researching people and places to feature in Chicago, I find that Thad has already pointed them out to me or had prior communication with them.

Organizing and curating engaging experiences defines the brand. I truly admire the way Thad has been able to accomplish this, and I’m constantly amazed by his energy and passion. If you attend any of these events, you’ll be welcomed with a warm greeting and feel at home right away. Maybe that’s the "Sidewalk" appeal—a casual and natural approach to promoting and celebrating football.

Events like an outdoor kickaround in the Solidarity Triangle, hosting an MLS Cup watch party, installing a collection at Gem Vintage, or summertime sidewalk markets have all helped shape the brand into what it is today. Inevitably a ball will be kicked your way, or you will be handed a controller to fire up retro FIFA '05 on PlayStation at the Winter Bazaar Pop-Up, or even challenged to a sudden-death foosball match with the sun blinding you. The point is, you’ll find yourself participating and enjoying the experience.

I feel incredibly fortunate to follow these adventures and capture as much as I can for this website. The way they continue to be a driving force for soccer culture in the city is personally inspiring, keeping me on my toes as I document this journey and many other inspiring stories that represent Chicago. I know I’m doing my part if I continue to walk that path.
